Busy Week

A week ago I went to Seattle to pick up Josh from UW. I spent a day with my Aunt Janet and Uncle Mike who treated me to a performance of CoppĂ©lia by the Pacific Northwest Ballet. It was my first live ballet performance and it was awesome.

Speaking of awesome. This is what Mike and Janet get to look at outside their back window.
Before picking up Josh in the afternoon, Mike and Janet took me to check out the Seattle Library. It's a pretty cool building.
 A view from above.
 Where is the Marples newsletter?
They are avid library patrons.
Josh and I headed down to Tacoma and stayed with my brother John for a couple of days. My niece, Jasmine, graduated from high school and my niece, Bekah, celebrated her 16th birthday. (These two pictures shamelessly stolen from John's site because I was too lazy to pull them out of iPhoto. It's okay, I took one of them.)

My mom was there as well and I gave her a ride home on Monday. Josh is back at home for the summer. Tuesday I was back to work and trying to catch up on stuff.

And I've been trying ever since. I haven't been running so my hamstring can heal up, but I have been going for short bike rides at lunch time. I took my camera with me today.
I caught a sleeper.

A Teaser Morning

It's 42 degrees, raining, and I'm going up against a 20 mph head wind. How can I not ride my bike to work today? I have 10 miles of visibility going for me.

When I Was A Child, I Spoke Like A Child

State Senator Michael Baumgartner ironically takes a grade-school-level shot at employees of the Seattle Times on his Facebook page. Apparently, the wounds on his thin skin still haven't healed after getting perforated by the Times' Truth Needle taking him to task over repeating myths and overstating the effects of the health care reform legislation.

What better way to exact revenge than by insulting them.
And...and...and you got cooties!

Will Scott Walker win?

My former state senator, Michael Baumgartner, is asking his Facebook friends if Scott Walker will win the recall the election that's taking place today. (I say former because thanks to the redistricting I am now in the gun-totin', God-fearin', bleedin' red 7th legislative district.)
Anyway, for most Spokanites, the recall election in Wisconsin is probably news to them because it's politics in Wisconsin. What our Social Security-killing state senator doesn't mention is that regardless of the election results, we'll find out whether Walker wins or not after the grand jury has heard all the evidence and votes.

It's a real fight for the people where the "mining" takes place.

They Can't Express Enough Regret

The Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith at the Vatican has studied this book thoroughly and decided to express "profound regret" to Sister Farley with a Notification.

"Among the many errors and ambiguities of this book are its positions on masturbation, homosexual acts, homosexual unions, the indissolubility of marriage and the problem of divorce and remarriage".

"Sr. Farley writes: 'Masturbation… usually does not raise any moral questions at all'. ... This statement does not conform to Catholic teaching: “Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action. ... For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved".

"Sr. Farley writes: 'My own view ... is that same-sex relationships and activities can be justified according to the same sexual ethic as heterosexual relationships and activities'. ... This opinion is not acceptable. The Catholic Church, in fact, distinguishes between persons with homosexual tendencies and homosexual acts. Concerning persons with homosexual tendencies, the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “they must be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided” . Concerning homosexual acts, however, the Catechism affirms: “Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered. They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved”".

I appreciate the efforts made by the Congregation and its consultants, over several years, to evaluate positions articulated in that book, and I do not dispute the judgment that some of the positions contained within it are not in accord with current official Catholic teaching.  In the end, I can only clarify that the book was not intended to be an expression of current official Catholic teaching, nor was it aimed specifically against this teaching.  It is of a different genre altogether.

Regardless, the Vatican is not happy with the non-doctrinal information contained in this non-doctrinal book.

"With this Notification, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith expresses profound regret that a member of an institute of consecrated life, Sr. Margaret A. Farley R.S.M., affirms positions that are in direct contradiction with Catholic teaching in the field of sexual morality.

Sadly, the Roman Catholic Church can authoritatively speak of profound regret when it comes to acts of grave depravity, intrinsically and gravely disordered action, and acting contrary to natural law.
