Because thinking deep is just too frickin' hard.
I like to remember what Lincoln once said when asked the same question:“Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right.”
You know, the shitty thing about it is that it will take years to purge the system of the Bush people who were not political appointees. I mean, we are going to have to deal with precedent-setting case law from Jay Bybee's Court of Appeals bench for possibly decades. Not to mention all of the people who were complicit in the massive Bush-era corruption who are still going to be in federal service. The upside is that maybe this is that hangover from hell that makes us change our opinions and realize we need to be more careful in the future.
